HOW TO PLAY

Learn the basics. Choose your faction. Take the field.

Paintball Royale is a head-to-head trading card game built around Units, Equipment, Missions and opposing Heroes. New to the game? Learn as you play—this guide will take you from setup to your first victory.

01Before the Battle

Prepare a 60-card deck, one Field Commander, a Starting Weapon, Hit/Damage markers, Momentum markers and an Initiative marker. If your Commander is defeated, you lose the game.

02Set Up the Field

  1. Shuffle your deck and place your Hero in play.
  2. Equip your Starting Weapon to your Hero.
  3. Draw 5 cards. If you need a better start, take a mulligan as allowed by your rules.
  4. Begin with 0 Momentum, then determine which player has Initiative.

03Start the Round & Resources

At the start of each round, each player draws 2 cards. Once per round, you may place 1 card from your hand face-down as a Resource. Once placed, the card’s printed text and abilities no longer matter.

Use your Resources to pay the cost of cards you play. For example, with 1 available Resource, you can play a card that costs 1. Once a Resource is used, it cannot be used again that round.

At the start of each new round, all of your Resources refresh and are ready to use again.

PLAY IT — OR TURN IT INTO A RESOURCE.

04Take Action

Players alternate taking one action at a time, beginning with the player who has Initiative. Resolve each action before the other player takes theirs.  If they have a unit in play, they may use it once per round, either attack, capture objectives, or use it's power.

05What Can You Do?

  • Play a Unit
  • Play an Action
  • Equip your team
  • Attack
  • Complete Missions
  • Use an ability
  • Pass & take the Initiative for next round.

06Deploy Units

Pay a Unit's Resource cost to bring it into play. Its card shows its cost, attack, defense, abilities and traits. Read these details carefully: they define what the Unit can do and how it contributes to your plan.  Most units are exhausted when they enter into play, and you cannot use him this round.

Notice his ability, This Front Player has Rush, and that means you can use him this round right away!

07Attack & deal damage

Choose a legal target for your attack and resolve damage using Hit Markers and the card's rules. Units defeated in combat are removed from play and go directly into your 'Deadbox', or your discard pile. Your opponent's Commander is the ultimate target—defeat it to win.

08Complete Missions

Mission cards are played into your Resource Row instead of placing a regular Resource that round. Each Mission gives you an additional objective to pursue beyond combat.

Meet the Mission’s requirements and pay any required costs to claim its reward. Choose your Missions carefully and plan your actions around the opportunities they create.

09Build Momentum

You start the game with 0 Momentum. As the battle unfolds, your Units, cards, and game type create opportunities to gain Momentum.

How you earn it can depend on the game type. For example, in Team Deathmatch, eliminating an enemy Unit may earn you 1 Momentum.

Save your Momentum or spend it strategically to complete objectives and capture Locations. Build Momentum, capture the objectives, and work toward victory.

10

END THE ROUND

Players continue alternating actions until both players are finished. The round then ends.

At the start of the next round, refresh your Resources, draw 2 cards, and play up to 1 card as a Resource, then continue the battle.

CAPTURE LOCATIONS

Locations are the objectives you're fighting over. Capture them to gain immediate or ongoing bonuses for your team and work toward winning the game.
